Alfred the Great

Alfred is only English king who is called "the great ". He was the yougest son of the Saxon king of Wessex. Alfred had three older brothers and seemed to have little chance of becoming king.But his farther and brothers died and, in 871, he became king of Wessex. Alfred had a fight many battles to stop the Vikings taking over Wessex.
The leader of the vikings was called Gruthum. He attacked Alfred at christmas when most of his soldiers were working on their farms. Alfred had to hide in a forest and wait until spring came. Then he gathered his men together and defeated the Vikings. Alfred and Gruthem agread
